A Colorful Beginning: Autumn Minis & Mooncake Musings

This past month, I’ve been working on a collection of five mini paintings inspired by our rapid approach to autumn. As the weather gets cooler, I’ve been spending more time with my kitty, Mooncake. Her name, 月饼, was inspired by a delicious traditional Chinese treat enjoyed during the Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival! 

I loved painting one of my favorite Moon Festival snacks, incorporating my own whimsy and perspective, including an adorable mini dumpling on the top. Thinking fondly of my time in Shanghai, where I found Mooncake and decided on her name, I wanted to do another Moon Festival Mini honoring my beloved feline friend. I tried to share with my viewers some of the whimsy, joy, and giddy excitement that Mooncake gives me. This piece is perfect for any place in the home that might inspire you to celebrate the little things– I’ve even included a lucky cat at the top to bring extra good fortune! 

Continuing with my smaller, 6x6x2 acrylic on wood pieces and autumn theme, I wanted to create a seasonal, colorful piece that encapsulated the fun spirit of celebrating Halloween! I started with a raspberry cocktail and added a collaged silver sparkly paper to encapsulate the playful elegance one exudes when celebrating. 

Inspired by my festive pieces, I added another Halloween special with three mooncakes and three stars, embodying the whimsical essence of fall. Including a Halloween potion/elixir, this piece had me reveling in festive charm. I had the idea to craft these colorful cocktails because of an experience I had ordering really interesting drinks overlooking Hong Kong's harbor. I wanted to capture some of the magic I felt in that moment in these pieces.

I concluded my mini series with a decadent slice of strawberry shortcake framed by two blushing pink ladyfingers and topped with a glossy maraschino cherry. I blended deliciousness, whimsy, and the Halloween spirit into one lovely treat meant to elevate any space in your home. 

I had such a wonderful time creating this mini series. Each piece in the series is a small, affordable work meant to make art, a luxury that often feels out of reach, accessible to everyone. Through dreamy colors and whimsical subjects, I hope to share a little joy and sweetness with anyone who wants to bring art into their everyday space. I plan on putting these five pieces on sale for just $99 to honor the great time I had reminiscing in the autumn holiday spirit!
